A small country on the west coast of Africa, Liberia has been influenced in many ways by the United States. This influence has its origins in the efforts of the American Colonization Society to settle freed American slaves in Africa, beginning in 1822. The government was modeled on that of the United States. Monrovia, the capital and principal port, was named after United States President James Monroe (see Monrovia). For African Americans this country has historical significance. As Africa's oldest republic, established by former black American slaves, Liberia played an important role as a model for African colonies seeking independence. Liberia has a land area of 38,250 square miles (99,067 square kilometers).
